Getting the News Out

Press releases open up free publicity ops when they’re written with media needs at their heart. Media decision-makers need to keep their audience coming back for more. Thus, they love to see press releases that share genuine news..
Content must be newsworthy, never advertorial.

Press Release Review and Rewrite

The Challenge:

A poorly written press release. (My poor client. I didn’t know what I was doing in 2010, yet he was happy with all the control I gave him over the content.)

The Result:

A press release that is far more effective because it’s moved away from focus on the host and more on the benefits to the listeners. It also gives media decision-makers something worth sharing.

Note: I have changed details to protect my client’s privacy—name, city, radio station and business name. Otherwise, the facts are genuine. Quotes are drawn from the notes I took at the time. (Yes, I have records going back to 2007.)

Legend:

  • Strike-through indicates text I have removed from the original press release.
  • Hover the mouse anywhere you see the dotted underlines. A popup will share why I removed or added text.
  • Square brackets surround additions and rewritten sections.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

NEW RADIO SHOW HELPS SMALL BUSINESSES CONQUER ECONOMIC CHALLENGES.

VANCOUVER, Wash. – March 24, 2010 – Dr. J’s Business Buzz

aired March 23. Forces reader into mental math. You don’t want an “I don’t have time for this response.”

[began airing yesterday,] March 23. This [new] one-hour talk show focuses on strategies for reinforcing small businesses and assisting them as they face the challenges of surviving in today’s complex economic environment. Dr. J’s Business Buzz will be airing every Tuesday at 3:00 p.m. on KPMM, AM 1280.

“I am a small business man. I am one of them. Many would find this redundant. Others condescending.

I have 30-years’ experience as a small business owner. [Therefore], I am

the best No one likes a braggart.

equipped to understand [their challenges] and support them. I went through all of it when the Canadian dollar crashed to under US$0.69 in 1985. The strategies I’m sharing today were tested in that crucible. I appeal to small business owners on that basis,”

states [says] When a simpler word works, it’s better.

host Dr. Nerill Jainerberg.

At a time when

it has become regular to Wordy.

[we regularly] see ‘Closing Sale!’ signs covering business windows, Jainerberg offers guidance businesses can use to keep their doors open. [That’s why] he teaches through humorous stories and firsthand knowledge.

from his own experiences, This is non-essential text. If it’s firsthand, it is from his experience.
Jainerberg teaches his I moved this idea so I could create a quote. This is much more effective. It makes Jainerberg someone people can relate to.

“I want my listeners to thrive in the current economic state.

Listeners confirm Jainerberg’s uncanny ability to identify key areas critical to make a small business flourish. There’s only one show so far. It’s too early to claim listeners have confirmed anything.
His solutions are Eliminating to bring into the quote strengthens the message. It also smooths over the current lack of proof.
[I like sharing] streamlined, specific, and solid ideas—ready to use immediately.” This builds a picture of what Dr. J is like.

The radio show schedules 2 – 3 call-in guests from different walks of life, including attorneys, accountants, small business owners, and CEOs of larger companies. Dr. J’s guests discuss diverse ways to create a successful business. Jainerberg also shares his expertise and specific financial strategies throughout the talk show. [Listeners can expect to walk away from each hour knowing how to increase profitability.] This is an example of reframing information so it answers the question, “What’s in it for me?”

“I am a small business man — I am one of them. I have experience as a small business owner. Therefore, I am the best equipped to understand and support them. I’ve been through all of it before. My new radio show appeals to small business owners on that basis,” states Jainerberg. You’ve already seen this. I moved it up so the quote would fall within the first 150 words. Early quotes increase interest.
Jainerberg’s 30 years experience, farsighted outlook, and PhD in Transpersonal Psychology from Eastbrook University have given him the skills necessary to educate his listeners. With an impressive success record running a number of different companies, including offering financial and management services since 1986, he is no stranger to business. He helps his listeners define and achieve their financial and business goals by providing exercises, coaching, and necessary resources. This whole paragraph reads as boastful and needs significant editing.
Jainerberg can back his claims. He moved to Canada at the age of 25, where he decided to change his career path from pilot to businessman. Within a few years, Jainerberg had established NJ Group, Inc. There he started a ten-day course in self-confidence called Expand Unlimited. Articles about this program, and his other corporate ventures were published in magazines and papers as prestigious as Asia Week, The Peak in Hong Kong, the Malaysian Tatler, and Influence. He provided services to some of Canada’s wealthiest companies and individuals. While there is useful information here, it needs to be reframed.

[Jainerberg brings 30 years’ experience and a PhD in Transpersonal Psychology to the program. However long before he earned his degree, he began building small business enterprises. He immigrated to Canada at 25, changed his career path from pilot to businessman, and established NJ Group Inc. within a few years. There he started a 10-day course in self-confidence—Expand Unlimited. Soon the program and other Jainerberg corporate ventures were the talk of prestigious Canadian and Asian business magazines and papers.]

After Jainerberg sold most of his NJ Group holdings, he moved to the United States. He dabbled in America’s corporate world for a few years, before launching his own mortgage company.

which he sold about the time the mortgage market began to sour. He saw the trends and got out. Not only is this wordy. It works against his role as a strong business coach. We don’t want him sounding like an opportunist.
[He feels fortunate that he sold the company just as the mortgage market began to sour.] This is a more positive message. It doesn’t suggest his exodus from the industry was a cause of its implosion.
He now provides business coaching services through Growth By Plan here in Vancouver, Wash. (http://growbyplan.com) It’s too soon for this type of information. It also sounds advertorial.
[“As I began seeing many businesses going under through lack of sales and financial knowledge, I saw the need for business coaching that develops B2B and B2C skills. That’s why I try to take an innovative approach to mentoring. It’s about implementation and learning where to find resources. It’s about valuable connections.”] This shows entrepreneurial spirit and camaraderie. It also suggests getting to know him be beneficial. This man is willing to share his knowledge.

[The idea for a radio program arose when he realized Growth By Plan, his business coaching service, needed to reach financially strapped entrepreneurs. “Businesses that are struggling may not have the resources to hire a business coach.”]

This business service shows small business owners how to grow their bottom line. Jainerberg helps others through an innovative approach to mentoring, implementing, and providing resources and valuable connections. Dr. J’s Business Buzz reveals some of the information Jainerberg shares with his business coaching clients. Again, there is useful information here, yet it needs to be reframed.

[Every week, Jainerberg promises to reveal select bits of the information he shares with his clients. This includes exercises and useful resources. So listen in on Tuesdays at 3:00 p.m. on KPMM, AM 1280. It could save your business!]

Oomph Group Inc. Announces Partnership with Teknion Corporation

Practice Management Content Goes Online Using Teknion Portal

[Toronto, February 13, 2008] Oomph Group Inc. [Oomph] announced today that they have established an
e-learning partnership with Teknion Corporation [Teknion], calling the new venture Teknion University. The partnership merges the recognized expertise behind Oomph’s online practice management workshops and seminars for architectural, legal and interior design associations in both Canada and the United States and Teknion’s expertise as international designers, architects and facility managers of innovative office systems.

Pairing Oomph’s Practice Management with Teknion’s online training program for its network of dealers, interior designers, architects and facility managers is an unusual development. However, Teknion embraced the collaboration with Oomph as part of their movement toward enhanced corporate responsibility in the marketplace and more sustainable business practices. Cynthia, VP of Marketing says, “We realized that the designers, architects, and facility managers we were training through Teknion University would really benefit from what Oomph has to offer. We feel that enhancing the quality of their practice also enhances the perceived quality of our office systems.”

“It has been a real pleasure to move from real-time presentations to the virtual setting of Teknion University. It has been our goal from the beginning to empower busy professionals with the management tools they need to really experience success. Working with Teknion allows us to do that even more effectively,” says Johanna Hoffmann, president of Oomph Group, Inc.

Oomph currently offers two online courses through the Teknion University portal: Delegating Without Losing Control and What If. Each course takes three hours to complete and is divided into six half-hour sessions. Participants earn continuing education credits as they pass each section test successfully.

Delegating Without Losing Control recognizes most professions must take liability concerns into account. This program teaches the tools professionals need to implement the three proven approaches to delegating – supervising, managing, and coaching.

The What If? course helps professionals evaluate how crisis-proof their practice is. The curriculum helps professionals anticipate crisis scenarios and develop an effective plan for each scenario.

In addition to adding online courses to their services, Oomph will continue to offer live workshops and seminars at venues  across Canada and the United States. While their workshops deliver useful information for most professional groups, Oomph Group is especially skilled at tailoring workshops to the needs of professionals in legal firms, and other highly regulated fields such as accounting, architecture, and interior design. The highly interactive environment and detailed workbooks provided make learning especially constructive.

A full listing of workshops and upcoming programs may be found at OomphGroup.com.

Children's Book Release

For Immediate Release:

Forgive the Father Who Has Beaten You?

How Far Would You Travel to Escape His Power?

Vancouver, WA, 11/15/17 —  Johnny’s pa has whipped him for the last time. He’s ‘out of here.’ He’s not sure where he’s going, but Johnny never expects to wake in a place like Eagle’s Watch. Who is this Elohim the creatures of this place talk about? What right does he have to expect Johnny to forgive his pa?

Awakening (Living Waters Books and More Co., 2015, ISBN-13: 978-0-9861859-0-8; $16.95 paperback,  $7.99 Kindle or EPUB; http://livingwatersbooks.com/awakening-childrens-book/) uses fiction to explore a tough subject many children face today. Setting the tale in a world where good and evil clashes and animals speak, D.K. Segraves introduces middle grade readers to concepts they will use for a lifetime.

Awakening is the second book in the Beacon of Light series. The first book, Eagle’s Watch, introduces the creatures of Eagle’s Watch through the eyes of Observer—a boy who uses action to suppress his memories. Segraves combines entertaining scenes with valuable life lessons. The power of love, forgiveness and helping each other shines out as the characters interact.

Her active participation in the children’s ministry at her church inspires Segraves. “I want to give something that lasts to the children I work with. In Awakening I expanded the application of the concepts introduced in Eagle’s Watch. Eagle’s Watch and Awakening share a message that I hope will help readers of all ages.”

This is the second time Segraves has partnered with illustrator and writing coach Denise Rutledge. They are collaborating currently on the third installment of the Beacon of Light trilogy.
